About Artist
Marcin Pietuch was born in 1968 in Kraków, the city he has been connected with all his life. He graduated from the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.
Since the 1990s he has worked as a scenographer – first for television theatre and TVP Kraków programmes, and since 1994 independently, running the Fabryka Dekoracji studio. He has designed sets for theatre, television and concerts, and since 2010 also narrative exhibitions and multimedia installations – among them the exhibition in the Rynek Underground beneath Kraków’s Main Market Square, for which he received the Honoris Gratia badge, as well as projects for museums and science centres across Poland and abroad. He described his experience of exhibition design in his doctoral thesis “Exhibition as Spectacle. Installation as the Scenography of an Exhibition-Spectacle, Based on Selected Scenographic Exhibition Projects: Rynek Underground – In the Footsteps of Kraków’s European Identity, Citadel – Museum of Pavilion X of the Warsaw Citadel, Geopark – an Educational Exhibition”, prepared at the Faculty of Stage Design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under the supervision of Dr hab. Paweł Dobrzycki. In it he presents the exhibition as a spectacle in which visitors, moving through successive spaces, become participants in a story told through image, light, sound and multimedia. The public defence took place on 25 March 2021 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw; in the same year he was awarded his doctoral degree.
From the very beginning of his career as a scenographer he has also been working intensively as a painter and draughtsman. Painting has always shaped his professional work – much of what he has achieved in scenography and exhibition design grew out of a painter’s experience: a feeling for colour and light, thinking in form and composition, and the ability to build a mood with the image alone. Portraits and nudes – the human being, the body and emotions – recur in his paintings and drawings. He is a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP).
